Belagavi civic body adopts resolution affirming city’s status as integral to Karnataka, amid protests by MES

The Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) on Wednesday adopted a resolution declaring that Belagavi is an integral part of Karnataka, following directions from the State government. The resolution was passed without discussion amid objections from members of the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES).

The resolution, a long-standing demand of Kannada organisations, was taken up during the evening session as it figured at the end of the agenda of the general council meeting.

Before the matter was considered, BCC Commissioner Kartik M. informed the house about a communication received from the Urban Development Department in response to the corporation’s query on the issue.

Referring to a government letter dated August 29, he said the State government had directed the corporation to proceed in accordance with a resolution adopted by the Karnataka Legislative Assembly on March 23, 1988.
