'Before this year ends': Elon Musk's AI challenge to Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey
Elon Musk has announced plans to use his xAI tool, Grok, to create a feature-length, 'historically accurate' film adaptation of Homer's 'The Odyssey' by the end of 2026. Critics and classicists have pointed out the inherent contradiction in his claim, as the poem is a work of mythology rather than historical record.
Why it matters
This reflects the ongoing intersection of AI development, celebrity culture, and the debate over the role of generative AI in creative arts.
Elon Musk has spent the better part of 2026 attacking Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey from the sidelines. Now he says he will make his own. In a post on X on Wednesday, the xAI owner declared that his AI video tool would deliver a competing version of Homer's epic before the calendar runs out. "Before this year ends, Grok Imagine will make a full-length movie of The Odyssey that is historically accurate and true to the art of Homer," he wrote, resharing a three-minute AI-generated short a follower had made using the tool.He offered no further details—no timeline beyond December, no explanation of how a text-to-video model gets to feature length, no word on who would write it.
