Bank group sues U.S. regulator over granting crypto trust charters

The Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA) has sued the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) over its practice of granting national trust charters to cryptocurrency firms. The bankers argue that these firms gain access to the banking system without meeting the same rigorous regulatory and insurance standards as traditional community banks.
Why it matters
This lawsuit represents a significant escalation in the conflict between traditional financial institutions and the emerging crypto sector over regulatory parity and market access.
The Independent Community Bankers of America filed a lawsuit against the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency in federal court on Friday, saying the agency is pushing "sweeping new powers to charter national trust banks that are not authorized by the National Bank Act," and they're letting these companies into the U.S. banking system without subjecting them to the same level of regulatory oversight that community banks face, putting those small banks "at a severe competitive disadvantage."
