WWF-India and the NGO Vetry hosted an awareness program at a school in Tiruppur to celebrate Nilgiri Tahr Day. The event included a drawing competition and educational lectures on the ecological importance of the state animal.
Why it matters
Educational outreach is crucial for wildlife conservation and fostering environmental stewardship among students.
The WWF-India and non-governmental organisation Vetry organised an educational and conservation awareness programme at the Government Higher Secondary School in Iduvampalayam, Tiruppur district, as part of observing the Nilgiri Tahr Day.
To spark creativity and interest in local wildlife, a school-wide drawing competition on the State animal was organised in two categories. First, second and third-place winners in both categories were awarded shields and certificates to recognise their artistic dedication to conservation. Members of the school’s Eco Club and the contest winners gathered for a special screening of a documentary showcasing Tamil Nadu’s rich biodiversity.
It was followed by an interactive lecture on the cultural roots and crucial ecological role the Nilgiri Tahr plays in sustaining grassland ecosystems.
