The Velankanni police arrested an autorickshaw driver for allegedly assaulting a police constable on security duty for the annual festival of Our Lady of Good Health at Velankanni in Nagapattinam on Tuesday.
The injured constable, C. Ajith, 31, attached to the Tamil Nadu Special Police Force was deployed for the festival security.
According to the police, Ajith, who was in plain clothes, questioned T. Silambarasan, 25, after noticing him driving rashly. An argument reportedly broke out between the two, during which Silambarasan assaulted the constable with his hand and kicked him, the police said.
Ajith sustained an internal injury to his lower abdomen and was admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital in Nagapattinam, where he is undergoing treatment.
