Australia news live: Asio chief reveals 16 terror plots foiled since Bondi shooting; premier says Victoria is ‘major events capital’ of world

Australian politicians Andrew Hastie and Barnaby Joyce are embroiled in a public dispute involving accusations of being 'lying cowards' and 'traitors' related to a One Nation cartoon. The conflict highlights ongoing tensions within Australian political discourse.
Why it matters
The public infighting reflects broader polarization and the volatile nature of political alliances in Australia.
Andrew Hastie says Barnaby Joyce had reached out about the One Nation cartoon that labelled him a “traitor”.
Hastie had this to say to Guardian Australia this morning:
double quotation mark Barnaby Joyce has reached out to me and explained that he didn’t know about the cartoon that called me a traitor eight times. I accept his explanation. I called him a lying coward because I thought he was protecting Pauline Hanson.
I now know that she is the only lying coward.
