Aussies risk $364-a-day fine over Census mistake this week: 'Not a big ask'

Australians are being reminded of the upcoming Census and the potential fines for failing to complete it. While penalties exist, experts note they are rarely enforced and intended to encourage compliance.
Why it matters
The Census is a critical tool for government planning, and understanding the legal requirements helps ensure public participation.
Australians should have received their Census letter by now, with instructions on how to complete the survey online. (Yahoo News Australia) By now, all Australians should be aware that Census night is approaching .
The nationwide survey collects information about everything from population and age to income, housing, education, employment and languages spoken at home, helping governments, businesses and community organisations plan for future services.
Every household across the nation is required to complete the survey on August 11, and for those who don't, steep penalties of $364 per day can apply until it is submitted.
Lying on the survey and providing false information can also result in a hefty fine of up to $3,640.
Sydney-based criminal lawyer Jahan Kalantar told Yahoo News the penalties don't immediately begin the day after the Census.
