August 2026 auto retail sales rise 17.51% to 24.23 lakh units
Indian automobile retail sales grew by 17.51% year-over-year in August 2026, reaching 24.23 lakh units. Notably, alternative fuel vehicles including CNG, hybrids, and EVs surpassed petrol-powered passenger vehicles for the first time.

The Indian automobile industry retailed 24,23,201 units in August 2026, registering a 17.51% growth YoY.
However, compared to July 2026, retail sales fell by 6.48% due to a seasonal monsoon lull and a festival calendar that shifted Ganesh Chaturthi and the spillover of Onam-led buying into September.
The growth was led by Wheeled Construction Equipment, up 31.45%; Two-Wheelers, up 19.69%; Passenger Vehicles, up 16.14%; and Commercial Vehicles, up 14.45%, while Three-Wheelers grew 8.64% and Tractors were effectively flat at 0.84%, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA) on Monday (September 7, 2026).
For the first time in India’s history, alternative fuels — CNG, hybrid and electric combined — overtook petrol in the Passenger Vehicle market, at 41.95% against petrol’s 40.85%.
