Audit Flags ETB537mln Uncollected At AAU, Including From Unreturned Academicians From Abroad

An audit by the Ethiopian Federal Auditor General revealed that Addis Ababa University has over 537 million ETB in uncollected receivables. The debt includes funds owed by academic staff who failed to return to the university after completing government-funded studies abroad.
Why it matters
The report exposes significant financial mismanagement and administrative failures within a major public educational institution in Ethiopia.
Addis Ababa University (AAU) is holding ETB 537.45 million in unsettled advances and receivables, including more than ETB 145.25 million that has remained outstanding for five to ten years, according to a report by the Office of the Federal Auditor General (OFAG).
The audit report for the 2017 Ethiopian Fiscal Year (2024/25) found that the university failed to take effective administrative and legal measures to recover long-standing receivables, despite repeated findings in previous audit cycles.
The outstanding balances stem from various advances and unfulfilled contractual obligations, including debts owed by academic staff who received university-funded education but failed to complete their required service commitments upon finishing their studies.
