A 53-year mystery has been solved with a little help from a garden club.
Margaret, a resident at Arvida Parklane in Auckland, lost touch with her pen pal Kathy in Fiji more than five decades ago. Last week, the pair sat down for lunch together for the first time.
The two struck up their friendship as young women, in an era when pen pal schemes linked people across the Pacific through school, church and community networks.
Long before texts and video calls, theirs was a friendship built letter by letter – photos, stories and stamps exchanged across the ocean.
Then, as often happens, life gets in the way.
“We got busy with our lives, until we somehow lost touch,” Margaret said.
