Auckland Airport to build 10km baggage conveyor system and ‘bag hotel’ to make luggage collection faster

Auckland Airport is setting up a new 10km luggage conveyor system and robot crane-controlled “bag hotel” to store up to 3000 pieces of luggage.

The new baggage system is part of the airport’s integrated terminal project and is set to be completed in 2029.

The conveyor network would be three times longer than the existing patchwork system.

“While the current system has served us well for decades, it’s been continually added to over the years, making it a bit of a spaghetti junction,” Auckland Airport chief infrastructure officer Murray Burt said.

Burt said the new system would increase capacity and resilience, reduce bottlenecks, and help manage more luggage.

He said once the project was finished, customers would spend less time queueing and have more time to get through security and do other airport activities.
