This case underscores efforts to combat systemic corruption and fraud within public insurance and legal systems.
A KuGompo City-based attorney is facing fraud charges relating to alleged fraudulent Road Accident Fund (RAF) claims totalling about R5.2m.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says it will oppose the bail application of Precious Muleya, who appeared briefly in the KuGompo magistrate’s court on Monday.
NPA Eastern Cape spokesperson Luxolo Tyali said Muleya’s formal bail application has been postponed to October 9.
Tyali said Muleya had allegedly been evading arrest before she was apprehended at OR Tambo International Airport on September 30.
“She initially appeared in the Kempton Park magistrate’s court in Gauteng, where the matter was subsequently transferred to the Eastern Cape for further proceedings,” he said.
Muleya faces a charge of fraud, alternatively theft, arising from claims allegedly submitted to the RAF on behalf of at least 12 beneficiaries.
