Assam bypoll: Counting of votes begins for Nagaon Lok Sabha seat

Vote counting for the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll in Assam has commenced under strict security measures. The election features a contest between candidates from the BJP, Congress, and AIUDF.
Why it matters
Elections in India are critical for democratic representation, and bypolls serve as indicators of shifting political sentiment in specific regions.
Counting of votes for the bypoll to the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat in Assam began at 8 a.m. on Friday (October 9, 2026) amid tight security, officials said.
The process started with postal ballots, followed by votes recorded in EVMs.
Counting is being held at two centres — Dawson Higher Secondary School and Government Boys' School in Nagaon — with 14 tables at each centre.
Strict security arrangements have been made at both the centres, and all candidates and political parties have been directed to seek permission from the district administration before taking out any kind of procession.
The main contest is among BJP candidate Devasish Sharma, a former IAS officer, Congress nominee and former MLA Sibamoni Bora, and AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal.
A total of 15 candidates were in the fray in the bypoll.
The voter turnout in the October 6 by-election was 76.19%.
