Why it matters
Preservation efforts are vital for maintaining cultural heritage and promoting historical tourism in the region.
The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Hyderabad Circle, on Monday (October 5, 2026) took up Dwarapala (Dwarapalaka) restoration and conservation works at the historic Thousand Pillar Temple in Hanumakonda as part of an initiative to preserve its valuable sculptural heritage.
The restoration is being undertaken in accordance with the principles of traditional iconometry and iconography to ensure that the correct proportions, posture, attributes and stylistic character of the Dwarapala sculptures are retained. Wherever replacement or mending is required, compatible stone matching the original in colour, texture, grain and physical characteristics is being selected and carefully dressed to blend with the existing sculpture, according to officials.
The intervention also includes the careful removal of deteriorated portions, preparation of sound contact surfaces, precision fitting, joint treatment and consolidation.
