As a Florida native, I skip Tampa's crowded beaches for this beautiful, lesser-visited spot
A Florida local recommends Tarpon Springs as a less crowded alternative to popular beach destinations like Tampa and Clearwater. The town is highlighted for its Greek heritage, authentic cuisine, and historical sponge docks.
Why it matters
Provides travel alternatives for tourists seeking to avoid over-tourism in popular coastal regions.
In my experience, Tarpon Springs is often more peaceful and less crowded than hot spots like Tampa. Ruth Peterkin/Getty Images As a Florida local, I like to ditch the crowded, popular beaches and head to Tarpon Springs . This town is a Greek enclave with tons of culture, charm, and a European feel — and amazing food. Fred Howard Park has gorgeous beaches and tons of space to sprawl out with loved ones. Growing up in Tampa, I learned early that getting to my area's most famous beaches isn't always as easy as it looks. Clearwater and St. Pete Beach are undeniably gorgeous, but by mid-morning on a weekend, the parking lots are full, and the sand is packed with umbrellas — and then, the traffic getting home takes hours.
