Artisans behind Telangana’s iconic Pochampally Ikat are coming to Hyderabad

The Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district administration is organizing an exhibition in Hyderabad to connect Pochampally Ikat weavers directly with consumers. This initiative aims to bypass intermediaries, improve artisan livelihoods, and preserve traditional handloom crafts against competition from powerlooms.
Why it matters
Direct-to-consumer models are vital for the economic survival of traditional artisans in an increasingly industrialized textile market.
For centuries, the vibrant Ikat saris and fabrics of Pochampally have travelled from village looms to urban wardrobes through a long chain of traders, wholesalers and retailers. Consumers admired the finished product, but rarely got to meet the people behind it. The Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district administration is now hoping to change that.
The report is a straightforward account of a government-led cultural and economic initiative.
