The Tamil Desiya Peravai has condemned the arrest of Deiva Tamil Peravai (DTP) members in Madurai on Saturday for attempting to stage a demonstration demanding the conduct of Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple consecration in Tamil.
In a statement, Tamil Desiya Peravai general secretary K. Venkatraman said members of Deiva Tamil Peravai assembled near a cinema at Pethaniaypuram in Madurai to stage a demonstration urging the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Department to ensure that ‘mantras’ in Tamil were recited along with Sanskrit hymns at the consecration events as directed by the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court.
The police, who earlier agreed to allow Deiva Tamil Peravai to stage the demonstration, prevented its members from staging the demonstration and arrested those who assembled at the demonstration site, he said.
