Arctic climate tipping points under delayed CO2 emissions mitigation

Researchers analyzed Earth system models to determine how Arctic climate responds to the cessation of CO2 emissions. They found that if emissions are not mitigated before global temperatures exceed 2°C, the Arctic may reach a tipping point leading to a collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation and abrupt cooling.
Why it matters
This study highlights the non-linear risks of climate change, suggesting that delayed action could trigger irreversible and unpredictable shifts in Arctic climate states.
