Archaea as 'flexitarians': Ammonia-oxidizing microbes also feed on amino acids

Researchers have discovered that ammonia-oxidizing archaea living in marine sponges are 'flexitarians' that consume amino acids in addition to ammonia. This mixotrophic behavior suggests these microbes play a more complex role in symbiotic relationships than previously understood.
