On April 21, nine-year-old Merieke Wessels spent her birthday giving her little sister, Mia-Miri, a second chance at life.

That is when Merieke’s bone marrow was transplanted into six-year-old Mia-Miri, who had spent more than a year battling T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (T-ALL).

The Wessels family from Strand will now remember April 21 as the day one daughter was born, and years later, the day her gift helped her little sister.

As September marks Leukaemia Awareness Month, the family is reflecting on the journey that brought them to that moment.
