Apple unveils new smart home products, showcasing updated Siri AI
Apple has unveiled the 'HomeView,' a wall-mounted smart home device featuring an AI-upgraded Siri, as it seeks to compete with Amazon and other AI-focused hardware developers. Analysts remain cautious about whether these AI features provide enough utility to drive consumer adoption in a crowded market.
Why it matters
Apple's success in the smart home sector is critical for its hardware growth strategy as it faces regulatory pressure on its services revenue.
The launches coincide with growing worries that connected devices could be vulnerable to hackers
[NEW YORK] Apple on Tuesday (Oct 13) began showing off a new round of smart home products, including an iPad-like device dubbed the HomeView meant to hang on walls or perch on tabletops that will showcase its AI-upgraded Siri virtual assistant.
The HomeView device, which starts at US$299 and starts shipping next month, is Apple’s latest entry into a highly competitive market for home connected devices.
It will feature a 7-inch screen and face recognition, will help users control doorbells, thermostats and smart locks in a market where Apple has tinkered for a decade without major success.
