Apple's smart home camera reportedly won't record video

Apple is reportedly developing a smart home camera that prioritizes privacy by using AI to detect activity rather than recording video. The device, codenamed J450, aims to automate home functions like lighting and climate control based on presence detection rather than providing a traditional security feed.
Why it matters
This represents a significant shift in the smart home market, moving away from surveillance-heavy security toward privacy-focused ambient computing.
Apple’s upcoming smart home camera is reportedly taking a very different approach to products from Ring and Google Nest, with the device designed to understand what is happening around the home without recording video for users to watch back.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, speaking on the new Power On podcast, says Apple’s camera will have “no video recording.” Instead, the device will use AI to analyze its surroundings and report what it detects.
The unusual approach could make privacy one of the defining features of Apple’s first dedicated home camera, while also making the product fundamentally different from a conventional security camera.
The device, known internally as J450, is expected to use a low-frame-rate camera alongside facial recognition and infrared sensors to identify people and pets around the home.
