Why it matters
This product signals a shift in privacy-focused smart home technology, prioritizing data processing on-device and avoiding traditional video surveillance methods.
Apple is rumored to be developing a smart home camera that will not record video. The device could be part of Apple's new smart home ecosystem and will work with a smart home hub, which the company is likely to unveil soon. According to information from Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, the camera is codenamed J450 and will complement the J490 smart home display. The device will have a cylindrical body and a very low frame rate, meaning it cannot be used as a standard CCTV camera. Instead, the camera will analyze its surroundings using AI and notify the user of events with text descriptions. For example, it can detect when a person enters a room using facial recognition.
