Aontú proposing dynamic pricing policy on petrol, diesel

The Irish political party Aontú has proposed a dynamic fuel pricing policy to lower costs for families by removing carbon taxes when fuel prices hit a specific threshold. The party also suggests cutting government waste and reducing VAT on electricity to ease the cost-of-living crisis.
Why it matters
The proposal highlights the ongoing political debate over balancing climate-related carbon taxes with immediate economic relief for citizens.
Aontú has launched its pre-budget submission which it said is focused on helping families and lowering food and fuel prices.
The party said a dynamic fuel pricing policy could be introduced to lower the high costs of fuel.
"We want to introduce dynamic pricing to petrol, diesel, agricultural diesel, and home heating oil. How this will work will be that when petrol and diesel reach €1.90 on international prices, cent per cent, the price of carbon tax will come off," party leader Peadar Tóibín said.
Aontú believes that this initiative would stabilise the price of petrol and diesel and help families across the country.
"The truth of the matter is that the Government is the author of much of these difficulties," Mr Tóibín said.
