Anthropic's Safety Superpower
Anthropic has been forced to disable its advanced AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, following a US government export control directive citing national security concerns. The move comes shortly after the models were released, highlighting ongoing tensions between AI capability, safety guardrails, and government regulation.
Why it matters
This incident marks a significant escalation in government intervention regarding the development and distribution of high-capability AI models.
I m sympathetic to the cynics who consistently characterize Anthropic s public statements, particularly those surrounding their model releases, as scare-mongering for the sake of marketing. It was only two months ago that Anthropic announced Mythos Preview, a model that they said was too dangerous to make publicly available, thanks in particular to its advanced cybersecurity capabilities. Then, two months later, the company publicly released Fable, a version of Mythos with various safety guardrails.
The text balances the author's personal experience with the model's capabilities against the official government directive.
