Anthropic’s cloud partnerships are getting messy

Anthropic is facing severe cloud capacity shortages from major providers like AWS, Google, and Microsoft as they increasingly view the AI startup as a direct competitor. Despite soaring revenues and a massive upcoming IPO target, the company has incurred heavy losses and worries about the reliability of alternative data center operators.
Why it matters
The bottleneck in cloud infrastructure highlights the intense competitive pressures and financial strains facing top-tier generative AI developers as they scale operations.
Anthropic is having trouble securing enough cloud capacity from AWS, Google, and Microsoft, which increasingly see the Claude maker as a competitor rather than a customer, according to an S-1 filing leaked to The Wall Street Journal .
The leaked filing provides more color to the numbers Reuters and the Financial Times reported in late September, including that Anthropic believes it could spend more than $750 billion on cloud contracts, some of which include deals still in negotiation.
And still, that is not enough. Anthropic is leasing its own data centers and working with third-party data center operators. But the firm worries those operators have a “limited operating history,” which could make them less reliable than the hyperscalers.
