Anthropic just rolled out a tool that'll decimate some people's dreams of writing AI novels undetected
Anthropic is introducing invisible watermarks to its Claude AI models to improve transparency regarding AI-generated content. This feature, which persists through some editing, aims to help identify AI-written text in response to growing concerns in the publishing industry.
Why it matters
As AI-generated content becomes indistinguishable from human writing, watermarking provides a critical mechanism for maintaining intellectual property integrity and academic honesty.
Anthropic is introducing a new feature to improve transparency on AI-generated content. Samuel Boivin/NurPhoto via Getty Images Anthropic will now embed invisible watermarks in Claude AI text. It is part of Anthropic's commitments under the EU AI Act but applies to text generated worldwide. Anthropic said that heavy editing can erase the mark, and a watermark does not guarantee AI use. It's going to get a lot harder to let Claude be a ghostwriter for everything from novels to homework. On Monday, Anthropic said new Claude models will embed an "imperceptible watermark" directly into AI-generated text. The watermark doesn't change the text's meaning or readability, but travels with it when copied and pasted and "may persist through some editing," the AI lab said.
