Tulu cinema has another feather in its cap with the feature film Imbu adjudged the Best Tulu movie at the 72nd National Film Awards, announced on Saturday (July 18, 2026) for 2024.

Directed by Shivadhwaj Shetty and produced by Prashanth Rai of Pichchar Studio, its story, screenplay and dialogue are also by Mr. Shetty.

According to Thamma Lakshmana, a senior art director who has also acted in Imbu, this is the eighth national award bagged by Tulu cinema.

Mr. Shetty’s debut, Gaggara , in Tulu, had also bagged the National Award in 2008.

Set in a vibrant rural community, Imbu follows Balanna, a devout man dedicated to his spiritual duties despite personal hardships like illiteracy and financial struggles. He finds joy in the uplift of others, especially his academically gifted daughter. His life changes when he receives a mobile phone, opening a world of Yakshagana performances and digital possibilities.
