Andhra Pradesh unveils roadmap to ensure 24X7 quality power supply amid El Niño challenges

Andhra Pradesh has introduced a new energy roadmap to ensure consistent power supply by increasing thermal capacity and integrating battery energy storage systems. These measures are designed to mitigate grid instability caused by rising demand and climate-related challenges like El Niño.
Why it matters
Effective energy planning is essential for maintaining industrial growth and public services in regions vulnerable to climate-induced power fluctuations.
Andhra Pradesh has unveiled a comprehensive energy roadmap aimed at ensuring uninterrupted round-the-clock quality power supply and strengthening the State’s grid amid the El Niño-related challenges, Special Chief Secretary (Energy) K. Vijayanand said on Tuesday (September 8, 2026).
Addressing the Andhra Pradesh Power Coordination Committee meeting at Vidyut Soudha, Mr. Vijayanand said the State would procure 1,600 MW of new thermal power through tariff-based competitive bidding. Developers would be required to maintain a mandatory 15-day coal stock to minimise the risk of fuel disruptions.
APGENCO has been permitted to procure imported coal through a transparent competitive bidding process. The DISCOMs have been directed to prepare a 12-month advance power supply plan.
