ANCWL demands disciplinary action against Mantashe over sex-for-jobs remarks

The ANC Women’s League has demanded a public apology and disciplinary action against ANC national chairperson Gwede Mantashe. This follows his controversial remarks regarding sex-for-jobs allegations in municipalities, where he used explicit language to distance the party from individual misconduct.
Why it matters
The incident highlights ongoing tensions regarding gender-based violence and political accountability within South Africa's ruling party.
The ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) has called for ANC national chairperson Gwede Mantashe to face a disciplinary hearing and issue a public apology over “gratuitously improper remarks” he made regarding allegations of sex-for-jobs in municipalities.
During a recent interview with Newzroom Afrika, Mantashe sought to distance the ANC from claims that municipal councillors frequently demand sexual favours in exchange for employment. In doing so, he explicitly referenced female genitalia.
We also call for [Gwede Mantashe] to be subjected to organisational disciplinary action in response to his repeated insults and attacks on women
“This thing of asking for isibumbu ... don’t involve the ANC in it,” Mantashe said. “Any individual asks for isibumbu from whoever they meet, and it has nothing to do with the ANC. If councillors choose to sleep with other people when elected, it is an individual’s bad conduct, not a thing of the ANC.”
