Ancient Hox code reveals the developmental roots of vertebrate hind fins and limbs

Researchers have identified an ancestral Hox9–10 genetic program that likely established the developmental foundation for vertebrate paired fins and limbs. This study provides new evidence for a stepwise evolutionary model explaining how complex appendages emerged in vertebrates.
Why it matters
Understanding the genetic mechanisms behind limb development offers critical insights into the evolutionary history of vertebrates and the biological innovations that allowed them to colonize diverse environments.
