ANC orders Mantashe to apologise after refusing ANCWL call

The ANC has ordered its national chairperson, Gwede Mantashe, to issue a formal apology following controversial remarks regarding 'sex-for-jobs' allegations. Mantashe initially refused the request but has now been directed to comply to close the matter.
Why it matters
The incident highlights ongoing tensions within South African politics regarding gender-based exploitation and the accountability of high-ranking party officials.
The ANC has ordered its national chairperson Gwede Mantashe to apologise for his controversial remarks regarding allegations of “sex-for-jobs” in municipalities.
This comes after Mantashe initially defied a call from the ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) to issue a public apology and face disciplinary action for what the league called “gratuitously improper remarks”.
After extensive discussions on the matter, the ANC’s national officials and national working committee decided to formally direct Mantashe to apologise.
“After these deliberations, the national chairperson has been directed to offer a sincere apology, and the matter is considered closed,” said ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu.
The ANC reiterated its policy that women deserve respect, dignity, empowerment, and the opportunity to realise their full potential.
