'An exciting event:' Dark matter or not, new SURF discovery marks potential breakthrough

Scientists at the Sanford Underground Research Facility have observed a unique particle interaction that could potentially be dark matter. While the event is considered a breakthrough, researchers caution that more data is needed before confirming a discovery.

LEAD-DEADWOOD — While scientists at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) won’t say they’ve definitely discovered dark matter, they’re still calling it an “exciting event.”
On Thursday, Sept. 10, Julia Delgaudio, engineering specialist for SURF’s LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment, met with members of the public at the Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center for the latest edition of its Ask a Scientist program. Fifteen people attended the discussion, which centered on LZ’s recent observation of what officials are calling "something entirely unique."
"It isn't anything else that we know of, so either way, we probably discovered a novel particle," Delgaudio told the crowd.
Delgaudio said significantly more analysis will be done before hard conclusions are drawn, yet the event still represents a potential breakthrough for the LZ team.
