An amateur singing circle spanning Chennai city

Paadarivom Padipparivom is a Chennai-based community singing group that evolved from online lockdown sessions into physical studio spaces and restaurant-hosted events. The initiative focuses on making music accessible to amateurs by teaching songs through simple rhythmic patterns rather than formal classical training.
Why it matters
It highlights the role of community-driven initiatives in fostering social connection and democratizing arts education in urban settings.
Paadarivom Padipparivom traces its origins to the lockdowns of 2020. Former IT professional Naggeshwerran S., aged 43, known as NGR in the music community, noticed a pattern while scrolling through the Smule karaoke app.
“People were singing because they enjoyed it, but many of them were also being mocked online. We realised there were many people who wanted to sing but did not know where to learn,” says Naggeshwerran.
