AMD executives say the chip company has a key advantage over Nvidia: being more open
AMD is positioning its open-source ROCm software as a strategic advantage to compete with Nvidia's dominant CUDA platform in the AI chip market. By leveraging community contributions, AMD aims to accelerate software development and lower barriers for AI developers.
Why it matters
The competition between proprietary and open-source software ecosystems is a critical factor in determining which hardware providers will dominate the rapidly expanding AI infrastructure market.

AMD partnered with OpenAI and Anthropic to leverage open-source ROCm for AI chip programming. AMD's stock fell 9% in late trading after it reported earnings. AMD says it has a major advantage in the AI chip race against Nvidia: being more open. AMD has long promoted this strategy through its open-source ROCm software, used to program AI chips. Since ROCm is available as open source, it's free for anyone to use, download, or modify. On the company's earnings call on Tuesday, AMD CEO Lisa Su said this software is at an "inflection point," with open-source contributions up 10 times in the past year.
