Amarinder Singh Raja Warring resigns as Congress Punjab chief, hands resignation to Rahul Gandhi

Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has resigned as the president of the Punjab Congress unit after a four-year tenure. He submitted his resignation to Rahul Gandhi amid ongoing internal party infighting ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections.
Why it matters
Leadership changes in the Punjab Congress are critical as the party prepares for state elections and attempts to resolve internal factionalism.
Congress leader Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Friday (October 2, 2026) met former party president Rahul Gandhi and handed him his formal resignation as chief of the Punjab unit.
Mr. Warring headed the State Congress for more than four years, and his resignation comes ahead of Assembly polls in the State due early next year. Long-standing infighting in the State unit preceded his resignation.
The Congress recently replaced its AICC in-charge Bhupesh Baghel, who spent weeks in Punjab recently trying to placate feuding factions, and appointed Sachin Pilot in his place.
Former State Minister Vijay Inder Singla already leads the race to become the new party chief in Punjab; Mr. Singla is also a co-treasurer of the AICC and oversees the party's properties.
