All Blacks: Dave Rennie urges World Rugby to rethink brake foot rule, make scrums more simple
All Blacks coach Dave Rennie is calling on World Rugby to simplify scrum rules, specifically criticizing the 'brake foot' regulation. He argues that current rules are difficult for referees to enforce consistently and lead to unfair tactical advantages.
Why it matters
Rule changes in professional sports impact game flow, player safety, and the strategic landscape of international rugby.
All Blacks coach Dave Rennie is looking for more clarity and a simplification of how referees will manage scrums ahead of the Rugby World Cup.
Set pieces came under the spotlight during the All Blacks tour of South Africa, with claims from the New Zealand coach that the Springboks were “walking around” at scrum time.
Speaking to Newstalk ZB’s Jason Pine, Rennie highlighted another key issue around scrums he felt needed to be addressed.
“So there’s a meeting, the shape of the game with World Rugby,” Rennie said.
“Brake foot was never mentioned. Then all of a sudden it comes in, and it becomes an area where I don’t believe the referees were fully committed to it either.
