Alex Eala receives good news after risking WTA penalties to represent the Philippines
Filipino tennis star Alexandra Eala was upset in the first round of the Wuhan Open by Chinese qualifier Shi Han. Despite entering as the No. 13 seed, Eala lost in three sets after a series of tournament withdrawals shifted the draw.
Why it matters
The result highlights the volatility of professional tennis rankings and the competitive threat posed by qualifiers in high-level tournaments.
Good news in sports can sometimes vanish faster than a rally ends. One headline promised great things for a rising tennis star this very week. Reality, however, had a very different plan waiting in store.
That star is Alexandra Eala of the Philippines. Her name draws big crowds and bigger expectations wherever she plays. The Wuhan Open became the latest stage for that spotlight and for her next big test.
The draw handed Eala a qualifier in the opening round. A victory would have set up a meeting with Leylah Fernandez or Ekaterina Alexandrova, giving the Filipina a clear path to the second round.
Eala entered Wuhan as the No. 13 seed. Only the top 8 seeds received first-round byes, so she had to begin in the Round of 64. Her qualifier was later confirmed as China's Shi Han.
