Alex Eala’s wait for a US Open opponent has ended with a familiar name.
The 17th-seeded Filipina will face American qualifier Mary Stoiana in the opening round at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York, according to the updated draw. Their matchup revisits a hard-court encounter Eala won two years ago, before either player reached her current standing.
Stoiana secured her place by defeating Yuan Yue 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in the final round of qualifying Friday, Aug. 28. The 23-year-old converted seven of 10 break points and saved 12 of 18, surviving repeated pressure to earn her opportunity.

Eala has reason to welcome the matchup. She beat Stoiana 7-5, 6-2 at the W100 tournament in Landisville, Pennsylvania, in August 2024.
