A woman who dumped the corpse of her newborn baby in an Auckland park rubbish bin told police she was unsure she was pregnant until she gave birth while taking a bath in her hotel room.
The 37-year-old lost consciousness moments after the birth, and when she regained consciousness she found the infant already dead, she said.
The macabre scene was discovered one year ago this month by a contractor emptying bins at Albert Park, which adjoins the University of Auckland and Auckland University of Technology in the city centre.
Most details of the case can now be reported for the first time, following the woman’s recent guilty plea. However, interim name suppression remains in place and she is expected to seek permanent suppression next month when she appears in Auckland District Court for sentencing.
