Albania and Armenia reach hepatitis B control milestone, advancing WHO Europe’s path to elimination
Albania and Armenia have achieved a hepatitis B control milestone, strengthening the WHO European Region’s trajectory toward hepatitis B elimination, according to a WHO Europe update published on 12 October 2026. The announcement highlights progress in controlling the virus through public health efforts that improve prevention and care services.
Hepatitis B is a viral infection that can become chronic and lead to serious liver disease, including cirrhosis and liver cancer. WHO notes that reducing transmission and managing infection require sustained health system capacity, including testing, vaccination, and clinical pathways for people living with hepatitis B.
WHO’s work in the European Region focuses on moving from disease control toward elimination by strengthening policies and service delivery. Elimination is typically built on lowering new infections, increasing detection and linkage to care, and ensuring people can access appropriate treatment and follow-up.
