Airfares soar: Delhi-Hyderabad up 68%; IndiGo hikes surcharge by up to Rs 350
Domestic airfares in India have risen by up to 68% due to high demand, reduced flight frequencies, and increased jet fuel costs. IndiGo has responded by raising fuel surcharges on both domestic and international flights effective October 6.
Why it matters
Rising travel costs impact consumer spending and the broader tourism and aviation sectors during the peak festive season.
If you are planning to travel this festive season, airfares have just got more expensive. In fact, Indians planning to fly home this festive season or take a domestic holiday towards the end of the year may have to pay considerably more for their tickets.Fares on several major domestic routes have already climbed by as much as 68% compared with a year earlier, as airlines contend with strong passenger demand, higher fuel costs and reduced flight frequencies on some sectors.Data from global aviation analytics firm OAG shows that airlines have scheduled 5% fewer domestic flights for the October-December quarter than during the same period last year. However, total seat capacity has fallen by only 1.2%. This indicates that airlines are operating fewer flights while deploying larger aircraft with more seats, keeping overall capacity relatively steady.
