A new Lancet HIV report recommends that healthcare systems shift from standard antiretroviral therapy to a comprehensive healthy-aging model for older HIV patients. As the population of people living with HIV ages, the report emphasizes managing physiological decline and reducing polypharmacy.
Why it matters
With half of the HIV-positive population projected to be over 50 by 2040, this shift is critical for addressing the unique long-term care needs of this demographic.
A new report by a group of HIV researchers in the journal Lancet HIV recommends that health systems caring for older individuals with HIV should move beyond the standard antiretroviral therapy to a more comprehensive, healthy-aging approach. The report was led by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Yale School of Medicine, with colleagues at more than 40 institutions and nine persons living with HIV.
