‘Ahead of Starlink in queue’: Sunil Mittal hopes OneWeb gets nod days Elon Musk
Sunil Bharti Mittal of Eutelsat OneWeb stated that his company is ahead of Elon Musk's Starlink in the queue for Indian satellite internet licensing. This follows Musk's public criticism regarding alleged monopolistic barriers to entry in the Indian market.
Why it matters
The dispute underscores the intense competition for the emerging satellite broadband market in India and the regulatory challenges faced by global tech giants.
Amid the controversy surrounding Elon Musk-owned Starlink’s India entry, Bharti Airtel Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal on Wednesday said his satellite communications venture, Eutelsat OneWeb, had applied for a licence in India five years ago. According to Mittal, Eutelsat OneWeb was well ahead of Elon Musk's Starlink in the queue. The statement comes after Musk recently claimed on X that certain oligarchs were preventing Starlink from entering the Indian market because they wanted to retain a "monopolistic chokehold" on Indians.
