Aged, sedimented pipelines hit water-carrying capacity in Kochi

Assessments by the French firm SUEZ have revealed that Kochi's water infrastructure is suffering from significant deterioration, including sediment buildup and contamination risks in underwater pipelines. The Kerala Water Authority plans to use these findings to redesign the city's water distribution network starting next year.
Why it matters
Aging urban infrastructure poses a direct threat to public health and water security, highlighting the critical need for modernization in rapidly growing cities.
Studies conducted by French firm SUEZ to assess the condition of Kerala Water Authority (KWA) pipelines in Kochi Corporation have found significant deterioration in pipelines in several localities, especially in Kaloor and Karuvelipady divisions. Substantial deposits have been observed inside the pipes, restricting water flow, according to sources. Several pipelines running beneath the backwaters have also been identified as sources of contamination and are slated for replacement. Such pipelines have been identified in Karuvelipady, Fort Kochi, and Mattancherry.
