After October 1, only smaller 5 or 10 kg LPG refills await non-eKYC households
Starting October 1, Indian households must complete biometric Aadhaar authentication to continue receiving subsidized LPG refills. Those who do not comply will be ineligible for the standard 14.2 kg subsidized cylinders and will instead be restricted to purchasing smaller, non-subsidized cylinders at market rates.
Why it matters
This policy change is a significant administrative shift aimed at preventing the diversion of subsidized fuel and ensuring benefits reach intended recipients.
Biometric Aadhaar Authentication, of the connection, will become mandatory for households to continue drawing subsidised domestic liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) refills from October 1.
For those not willing or unable to complete the BAA or eKYC, as it is popularly known, LPG will still be supplied but at applicable market price without any subsidy. Further, such consumers will not get the 14.2 kg refills.
Instead they will be supplied with the 5 or 10 kg cylinders, subject to availability with the oil marketing companies, the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said on Saturday (September 19, 2026).
Effectively, non-eKYC households will not only lose access to the 14.2 kg subsidised refills but also end up paying more for cooking gas. Unlike 14.2 refills, the 5 and 10 kg cylinders are free trade products and priced on the lines of commercial LPG.
