Why it matters
This case raises questions regarding internal police investigations and the handling of mental health or foul play allegations within security forces.
A 40-year-old police constable allegedly ended his life by shooting himself with his service rifle in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district, police said on Friday (October 1, 2026), even as his family alleged that he was murdered.
Constable Vijendra Thakur, of the Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) died on September 30 at Sendra Camp in Farsegarh police station area, the Bijapur Police said in a statement on Friday.
Initial investigations concluded that it was a death by suicide, and an accidental death report has been registered at Farsegarh police station, and the matter is being probed, the statement added.
However, Thakur’s family from Devnagar village in Surajpur district alleged that he had been murdered. On Friday morning, family members along with local residents staged a protest in the Ramanujnagar development block of Surajpur.
“He has been murdered; he was not a coward who would commit suicide,” Thakur’s wife Sarita told journalists.
