This achievement marks a significant milestone in the climbing world, demonstrating extreme human endurance and skill, and highlighting the enduring challenge of elite-level routes established by legendary climbers.
Italian climber Stefano Carnati has made the second ascent of Adam Ondra’s Torture Physique Integrale 5.15- in Switzerland’s Gastlosen, 13 years after Ondra established the route. Carnati first arrived in Gastlosen at the beginning of August, having had the area on his radar for several years. After feeling strong following his summer training, he decided to take on Torture Physique Integrale.
The climb quickly revealed its difficulty. On his second day, Carnati managed to climb Torture Physique 2.0 (5.14d), reaching the route’s second anchor. He then spent four further sessions working out the connection into the final section.
“That last sequence is intricate, with complex body positions that took some serious effort to figure out,” Carnati explained. The sequence culminates in a huge move from an undercling, at the very limit of his reach.
