Africans, Russians, Ukrainians among 2,089 deported from Assam since 2016

The Assam state government reported that 2,089 foreign nationals were deported between 2016 and 2026, with the vast majority being from Bangladesh. The data also includes a breakdown of deportees by nationality and religious identity.
Why it matters
This data highlights the ongoing political and social complexities surrounding immigration and border control in the Indian state of Assam.
Not all foreigners deported, expelled, or pushed back from Assam are Bangladeshi nationals.
The State government told the Assembly on Wednesday that 2,089 foreigners were deported from January 2016 to June 2026 for entering or staying in Assam illegally. Among these, 2,023 were from Bangladesh.
“The second-largest number of foreigners deported or expelled is from Myanmar, followed by Nigerians,” Assam Accord Implementation Minister Atul Bora said in reply to a question from Congress MLA Abdur Rahim Ahmed.
According to data provided by the Minister, who is also the president of the Asom Gana Parishad, the designated State authorities detected and deported 39 nationals from Myanmar and 18 from Nigeria, two each from Afghanistan, Russia, and Ukraine, and one each from Kenya, Pakistan, and Uganda over the past 10 years.
