NAIROBI, Kenya — Africa’s debt crisis is entering a decisive political phase this week as governments, lawmakers, civil society groups, academics and development finance experts converge for the sixth African Conference on Debt and Development, with organizers warning that the continent’s failure to act collectively has become almost as dangerous as the debt itself, writes Winston Mwale.

The African Forum and Network on Debt and Development, or AFRODAD, and its partners will hold AfCoDD VI from Aug. 25-28 under the theme “From Fragmentation to Influence: Advancing the Common African Position on Debt.”

The conference comes months after the African Union adopted the Common African Position on Debt in February, creating what organizers describe as a rare opportunity for African countries to move beyond declarations and begin exercising collective power in negotiations over sovereign debt and the global financial system.
